What is Open Access?

Open access (OA) refers to creative work or scholarship that is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. Work that is OA is freely available to anyone with an Internet connection, increasing accessibility to those who do not have access to subscription-based scholarly literature. OA scholarship is also, as described by Kevin Smith at Duke, a statement about the values of scholarship; an attempt to introduce more transparency into the process of research and to encourage greater participation in its creation, financing, and evaluation.
